Cedar Springs, Massachusetts, is home to Manning's Hardware, a store that has been in the Manning family for generations and was built ages ago on land with a "resonance in the soil." It is now run by Noble Manning, a man devoted to routine: he rises at 6:15, eats the same oatmeal every morning, and makes certain that every item in the store sits in its designated place.

Lately, though, things have been different. Tools migrate between shelves overnight. Quantities shift like quantum variables refusing to be measured. Shadows behave incorrectly. The building itself seems aware in ways Noble would rather not examine.

Late one night, Noble's daughter Sarah calls: a family heirloom in her possession — her grandmother's key — is glowing. The next evening, Noble is visited by a presence called the Night Walker, a being who appears "wherever worlds meet." The Night Walker explains that Cedar Springs now stands at a crossroads.
